A starting point based on demonstrated skill
Who Can Join the Senior Abacus Programme?
Older beginners
Children without previous abacus experience begin with essential tool use, finger technique and place value before advanced work.
Continuing learners
Children moving from a Junior pathway can continue after the required foundations are stable.
Transfer learners
We check retained technique, operations and visualisation before matching a child to one of our stages.
School class does not automatically decide the abacus level
We consider age and school experience, but the abacus starting point depends on the learner’s current technique, place value, arithmetic understanding and independence.

What Does the Senior Abacus Curriculum Cover?
| Curriculum area | Learning focus | Practice example | Progress check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation review | Posture, finger movement and place value | Represent and manipulate suitable numbers | Technique remains correct with fewer prompts |
| Addition and subtraction | Accurate multi-step operations | Mixed calculations using the taught strategy | Method and answers remain dependable |
| Multiplication | Place-value organisation and structured products | Progress from simple to larger factors | Columns and sequence are controlled |
| Division | Stepwise division with correct placement | Suitable divisors and dividends | The child follows the complete method independently |
| Speed development | Increase pace without losing accuracy | Timed work only after the method is stable | Accuracy remains consistent at the new pace |
| Visualisation | Picture bead positions and movements | Mental tasks matched to current physical skills | The child explains or demonstrates the method |
Topics are introduced according to assessed readiness. The detailed curriculum and levels page explains the complete learning sequence.
No need to skip the foundations
How Do We Place Older Beginners and Transfer Students?
- 1
Review the learning history
Parents tell us whether the child is new, returning after a break or transferring from another provider.
- 2
Observe current technique
We check hand use, bead control, number representation and place value.
- 3
Check operations
The child attempts work that helps us identify stable skills and gaps without turning the assessment into a high-pressure test.
- 4
Recommend a starting stage
We explain what can be retained, what needs revision and which batch is suitable.
Focused practice matched to the current stage
How Much Practice Does a Senior Learner Need?
Practice priorities
- Use the assigned operation and technique.
- Keep a regular schedule across the week.
- Record where accuracy begins to fall.
- Increase speed only when instructed.
- Bring unclear examples to the next class.
Why more is not always better
Long practice can reinforce an incorrect sequence or create avoidable pressure. Our trainer recommends a suitable amount according to stage, accuracy and concentration.
Stable performance before the next stage

- Accurate multi-step operations
